Can You Leave A Bluetooth Speaker Plugged In All The Time?

Bluetooth speakers are a boon when you want portability, affordability & low power usage. The speaker comes at different sizes & prices. Every electric appliance comes with warnings before using it. Which is the best way of charging? Should I leave it connected to a charger all day?

Is it safe to use plugged-in Bluetooth speakers all the time?

If you leave your Bluetooth speaker connected all day long, the battery will be damaged. Charging the battery even when it is full might lead to overheating & result in the battery exploding.

It is not necessary to charge it up to 100 percent as its cells can be damaged. Most of the speakers are designed to trickle charge when they get 80-90 percent charge. If you are leaving the speaker for long, the trickle charge will fill it up & will damage the cells.

When the speaker is connected to a charger & you are not using it, then the battery remains 100 percent. If the charging drops to 99 percent, the trickle charger kicks in & fills the percentage back.

Why is a plugged-in Bluetooth speaker a good option?

In case you forget to charge your speaker, then leave it connected to the charger all the time so that the battery is full when you need to use it. Whenever you want to carry it for travel, the battery will always be full.

You can enjoy music continuously when you are outside the house. As the speaker is connected to a charger inside the house, it will not cut off music due to low battery power. If your speaker’s battery is damaged, leave it connected. Since the damaged batteries last only for a few minutes, connecting & disconnecting would be a problem, so leave them plugged in with them.

However, when you enjoy music with a damaged speaker connected to a charger, overheating can affect the performance of the speaker.

Should I keep plugging in the Bluetooth speaker even after 100% battery?

Most speakers, like smartphones, have li-ion batteries. You should not discharge the battery power to more than 25 percent or charge it to more than 90 percent. Therefore, when the charge of the speaker is below 30, connect it to the charger & unplug it before getting 100 percent.

If the lithium-ion battery pushes the last charge from 80 percent to 100 percent, it ages faster. You need to have a regular check on the battery percentage. If the percentage is not visible on the speaker, then you have time to know when to plug it into the charger or unplug it.

It is recommended to charge for four hours, but you should charge it for three hours. You should recharge the speaker once to the full battery once in a while because recharging it all the time will affect the work of the speaker.

You will be recalibrating the battery if you charge 0 to 100 percent once in a while. If you think about charging the speaker 100 percent, so that the battery never drains, it can affect your speaker & will make you more worried than charging it.

Batteries with advanced sensors ensure that they do not overcharge, though leaving them unplugged can damage the speaker. You have completed one cycle when the battery is charged up to 100 percent & the battery has a limited number of cycles before it is damaged completely. Batteries may last long before they exhaust these cycles, but if you leave exhausted every time, the cycles might get exhausted earlier & you won’t know it.

Will the battery suffer memory effects if not charged to 100%?

The memory effect of the battery occurs when you charge it between 20 percent and 80 percent. The battery will forget the remaining 40 percent & 20 percent will become the new zero & 80 percent will become the new 100 percent. This will happen with old batteries such as NiCd & NiMH batteries & not lithium-ion batteries. The speakers with a lithium-ion battery do not suffer from the battery memory effect.

Can I play music while plugged into a Bluetooth speaker?

Yes, you can use the speaker as always without any disturbance. The speaker will sound good but will have certain problems.

You allow the speaker to charge & play music with power. The speaker might become overheated due to using it while charging. The overheating doesn’t affect your speaker at first, but if it continues, the battery will be affected & the speaker will lose its performance.

The battery should not get too cold or neither should it get too hot. A battery kept at 20° & 30°C is best for its performance. Anything below or above the range will damage the battery.

If you are using a speaker & charging it at the same time, then the battery may never get to 80 percent. If you turn up the volume, the phone might get discharged earlier. It would be better to switch off the speaker & allow it to charge fast & then use it. Overheating will be avoided & you will also save battery.

Do you care about Bluetooth speaker batteries for a long lifespan?

A new Bluetooth speaker will provide 10 to 20 hours of battery if fully charged. There are devices that last for four hours & some last for 24 hours. The size of the battery matters.

Many factors are responsible for the long life of the battery that manufacturers promise. The most important factor is that the speaker connected via Bluetooth lasts longer than being connected via WiFi. A battery can last for 12 hours when connected to Bluetooth, whereas it will last for 8 hours when connected to Wifi.

Buying an advanced speaker with a battery that will disconnect before it charges to 100 percent & before it drains to 0 will be a great option. These speakers are not so popular, so you need to save your battery.

You can protect your battery by the following methods:-

  • Not charging till 100 percent
  • Not allowing discharge to zero
  • Do not keep it discharged for a long period
  • Place in areas having temperatures between 20 & 30°C
  • Use surge protectors while charging the speaker
  • Keep it in a dry environment

Can I adopt fast charging rather than using a plugged-in Bluetooth speaker all the time?

If you are having a habit of forgetting to unplug, then go for fast charging. You just need to wait for a short period. Once the battery is full, you can unplug it from the charger.

Most of the speakers come with fast-charging standards. If the battery is not capable of fast charging, it will end up heated & can be damaged. Fast charging would be convenient if you want to carry your speaker outside.

When you decide to fast charge the battery, make sure you are using the recommended charger by the brand so that your battery is not damaged by heat.

Conclusion:-

There are a lot of warnings regarding how to use speakers & their charging. It depends on your care and how long your speaker is going to last. If your response to the speaker is not good, then you will be looking for a replacement in just a few months.

It’s recommended to avoid leaving the speaker plugged in, even when you are not using it. You may notice changes after a few months that your battery can’t take the heat anymore. You can replace your battery if it is damaged instead of keeping the speaker plugged in all the time.
